DIY Knot Pillow

Make your space your own and instantly freshen up your couch or bed with this fun, do-it-yourself knot pillow -- no advanced sewing skills required. All you need is to be able to sew a straight line, and you, too, can make this unique pillow.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium-weight, 45-wide knit fabric, 1 yard

  • Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and mat

  • Pins

  • Sewing machine with a 90/14 ball point needle

  • Iron and ironing board

  • 2 safety pins

  • Cardboard wrapping paper tube

  • 32-ounce bag of pillow stuffing (or reuse stuffing from an old pillow)

  • Long wooden stick or dowel

  • Hand sewing needle and thread

Step 1

Use a rotary cutter or scissors to cut six strips of fabric that measure 36-by-6-inches.

Step 2

With the right sides together, pin the short edges of the fabric strips together to form a 6-yard strip of fabric.

Step 3

Sew the short sides of the strips together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Be sure to remove the pins as you sew. Cut the fabric strip to be 5 1/2 yards long.

Step 4

Press the seams open with an iron.

Step 5

With the right sides together, pin and sew the long edge of the strip together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Be sure to remove the pins as you sew. This will form a 5 1/2 yard fabric tube.

Step 6

Attach a safety pin to one end of the fabric tube.

Step 7

Turn the safety pin into the fabric tube.

Step 8

Manipulate the pin through the tube, pulling the end of the fabric into itself.

Step 9

When the pin reaches the other end of the fabric tube, continue pulling the fabric through until the fabric tube is right-side out.

Step 10

Attach a safety pin to one end of the fabric tube to keep it closed while you put the stuffing inside. Slide the other end of the fabric tube over a cardboard wrapping paper tube. Gather the fabric on the cardboard tube until the end is even with the pinned end of the fabric tube.

Step 11

Push the stuffing into the cardboard tube and use a long wooden stick or dowel to push it all the way through and into the fabric tube. As the stuffing fills the fabric tube, it will slowly come off of the cardboard tube. Continue filling the fabric tube this way until the entire fabric tube is filled with stuffing.

Step 12

Attach a safety pin to the other end of the fabric tube to keep the stuffing inside while you create the knot.

Step 14

Once the knot is completed, insert one end of the tube into the other end.

Step 15

Use a hand sewing needle and thread to attach the ends together in the back of the knot pillow.
