Disco Party Game Ideas

Music stars such as Donna Summer and The Bee Gees thrived during the late 1970s disco era, with the music still resonating with audiences who mimic John Travolta's "Saturday Night Fever" dance moves. Disco continues to have a following, with fans holding disco-themed parties to "shake their groove thing" and engage in games capturing the spirit of the disco era.

Party guests display their disco dancing skills--or lack thereof--in this competition. The host collects videos of popular disco-era dances such as the "Bump," the "Bus Stop" and the "Hustle." Players watch the video and then take turns trying to perform the exact moves from the video. With the host and another guest serving as judges, players win small prizes in categories such as "Funniest Dancer," "Most Exact Dance Moves," "Most Inventive Dancer" and "Two-Left-Feet Dancer."

The classic party game "Charades" receives the disco treatment. The host writes musical acts, song titles and types of dances on slips of paper and puts them into a hat. Players divide into teams, with teams taking turns picking a paper slip from the hat and acting out the act, song or dance without speaking. Teams guessing correctly score 1 point; should a team not guess correctly, the opposing team gets a chance to steal the point. The team scoring 10 points first, wins.

For this relay game, players divide into two teams and quickly dress in disco garb such as Afro wigs, fringe vests, hippie glasses, leisure suits, love beads, nylon dresses and shirts, and platform shoes, putting the clothing on over their own clothes, then run to an inflatable disco ball 30 feet away and return to the start line, where they remove the disco clothes and tag the next player in line. The first team to complete the relay, wins.

With disco music providing the soundtrack, party guests try mastering the art of hula hooping. As players work with their hula hoops, the party host calls out commands such as "Stand on one foot," "Touch your head" and "Turn around." Players who drop their hula hoop exit the game. Play continues until one player remains; that player takes a turn as the disco hula hoop commander for the next round.
