Sussman Volk is credited with making the first pastrami sandwich in New York.

Pastrami is made from the brisket cut of beef. It is cured for several days with spices such as paprika, coriander, mustard seed, salt and pepper. Pastrami is then slow roasted to an internal temperature of 165 F during the cooking process before it is sent for slicing or packaging. If you purchased pastrami deli meat that you wish to make into a hot pastrami sandwich, you may reheat the deli meat in your oven.

Step 2

Place a layer of foil over the small baking sheet.

Step 3

Lay your pastrami in a single layer across the foil.

Step 4

Heat for five to seven minutes. The USDA recommends that reheated meat reach an internal temperature of at least 165 F to be safe. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature before consuming. Note, the meat should easily reach this temperature because deli pastrami is usually sliced very thin.
