Use a dinosaur toy for inspiration when creating your pinata.

Whether you're hosting a dinosaur-themed birthday party or a prehistoric-inspired event, a T-Rex pinata is a festive decoration that can add some entertainment to many occasions. You can create a dinosaur pinata at home using a simple papier mache method. Design the pinata specifically for your event by painting it to match the party's color scheme. Hang the finished T-Rex pinata in your yard or over the dance floor to serve as a one-of-a-kind decoration--before it's smashed apart to reveal the prizes within.

Step 1

Blow up a latex balloon to the desired size of the pinata dinosaur's body. T-Rex dinosaurs have longer body shapes, so make your balloon oval-shaped. Seal the balloon with a knot.

Step 2

Mix 2 cups of flour with 3 cups of water to create a papier mache adhesive that you'll use to build the pinata. Stir the ingredients together in a bowl until they create a smooth paste.

Step 3

Tear newspaper, paper bags or office paper into strips that are about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long.

Step 4

Dip one of the strips into the paste mixture. Run the strip between two fingers to push off any excess liquid, then place the strip on the balloon's surface. Continue this process until the entire balloon is covered with two or three layers of paper strips. Allow it to dry completely.

Step 5

Pop the balloon. Remove it from the oval-shaped ball from the hole where the balloon's knot was.

Step 6

Sketch the outline of a T-Rex's head and neck, including an open mouth with rows of sharp teeth. Also, draw the silhouette of the dinosaur's two short arms, as well as its two muscular walking legs. Sketch a long lizard-like tail. At the edge of each drawing, where it will attach to the body of the dinosaur, draw a 2-inch-thick tab. This tab will connect the shape to the papier mache body. Cut out all of the shapes and attached tabs.

Step 7

Bend the tabs on the cutouts backward so that they rest at a 90-degree angle. Place a piece of masking tape over the tab of the neck strip and adhere the piece near the top of the oval. Adhere the two arm pieces below the head shape, and the leg pieces on either side of the bottom of the oval. Tape the tail on the backside of the oval.

Step 8

Fill the oval with any goodies or prizes you desire, such as candy or small toys. Place the items through the hole from where the balloon was removed. Put a piece of masking tape over the hole once the pinata is full.

Step 9

Use poster paints to paint the paper cutouts and oval whatever color you choose, such as green, brown or blue. Make sure the pinata is totally covered in paint so that all the pieces blend together. Allow the paint to dry. Glue a googly eye on each side of the head.

Step 10

Use scissors to poke two holes on the top of the pinata, but don't puncture through the taped hole. Thread a string through the holes to hang the pinata.
