Makit & Bakit (Make It and Bake It) Sun Catchers, include baking crystals that melt in the oven to form translucent colored sections inside a metal frame. Follow the instructions for a Makit & Bakit Sun Catcher to create beautiful decorations to hang in your windows at home or to give as gifts. The plastic crystals give off a harmless odor during baking. Use a standard kitchen oven in a well-ventilated room and keep the crystals away from the broiler or open flame.

Step 2

Lay the cookie sheet flat on a firm surface. For best results, do not use an insulated cookie sheet. Tear off a piece of aluminum foil large enough to cover the cookie sheet. Lay the foil over the cookie sheet and fold it around the ends and sides to hold it securely in place.

Step 3

Lay the flat side of the sun catcher frame on the foil lined cookie sheet.

Step 4

Scoop up colored baking crystals with a teaspoon and pour them into the sections of the frame, except the hanging hole. Fill each section with the desired color with the edges even with the frame and a heap of crystals in the center. Baking crystals shrink, so overfill the center of each section. Use tweezers to add more crystals or move them around.

Step 5

Put the cookie sheet in the middle of the preheated oven. Bake 15 to 25 minutes until the crystals are smooth and look like glass. Colors may melt at different rates so keep the sun catcher in the oven until all the colors melt smoothly.

Step 6

Remove the cookie sheet and let it cool approximately 10 minutes. Peel away the foil from the back of the sun catcher. Note that it is normal for the plastic to make popping or crackling sounds while cooling.

Step 7

Tie a string or ribbon through the hanging hole and hang your sun catcher in a window.

Tip

Black and white colored crystals stay opaque when baked.

Warning

Baking crystals are a choking hazard and not for use by children under 3 years of age. Do not use a microwave or toaster oven. Leave the hanging hole empty.
