This pattern can be used to make a hacky sack, juggling balls or toys for babies and small children. The pattern is very basic, and you do not need extensive knitting skills to make a hacky sack. The pattern can be varied by using two or three colors for one ball. Stick to simple worsted sized yarn. Novelty yarns will make the project more difficult for the beginner.
Knitting the Ball
Step 1
Cast on nine stitches and turn work. Next row, knit one, then knit into the bit of yarn between that stitch and the next one. Increase after every stitch until you have 18 stitches. Knit one row, and in the next row, increase after each stitch until you have 36 stitches. Knit one row. In the next row, knit two stitches between each increase until you have 48 stitches.

Step 2
Knit 24 rows in garter stitch. Begin to decrease rows by knitting row 25 as knit two, knit two together and repeat. This leaves 36 stitches on the needles. Knit one row. Next row, knit two, knit two together and repeat until you have 18 stitches. Knit one row. Next row, knit two, knit two together until you have nine stitches.
Step 3
Cut the tail long enough to thread through the nine live stitches and sew the seam, pulling tightly as you go.
Step 4
Stuff open end with pellets and sew shut.
