Overview
Making a lottery-inspired scratch-off Valentine is an easy way to put a fun spin on a handmade Valentine for your significant other. The added element of mystery before they discover their winnings will have butterflies fluttering in your Valentine's stomach. Spoiler alert: Everyone wins!
What You'll Need
You'll need a 5 inch x 7 inch blank note card or cut white cardstock, black cardstock, decorative paper, different styles of letter stickers, heart stickers (ones that come in a cluster with sticky paper surrounding them), 2 inch heart punch, white glue, scissors, a pencil, a pen, silver water-based paint, dish soap, a white crayon and a small paint brush.
Use Decorative Paper and Hearts
Begin by gluing a 2 inch strip of decorative paper across your card. Then glue three black hearts over the strip.
Use Sticker Lettering
Next, use sticker lettering in different fonts to spell out what you would like to say. You can use a straight edge and a light pencil mark to keep your lettering straight.
Scratch-Off Portion
To make the scratch off portion of the card, use the negative space sticker paper around the heart shaped stickers to make a template for your scratch off hearts. Carefully press down all edges onto your card so paint doesn't seep under. Write a little saying in each of the hearts with black pen. Let the ink dry for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
Color Over with White Crayon
Next, color over the entire heart with white crayon. Be sure to coat the entire heart and message as this step is what makes the scratch-off possible.
Making Scratch-Off Paint
Mix 1 part dish soap to 2 parts silver paint. Use this solution to paint over the hearts. It might take a couple of coats to sufficiently cover the message. Allow for drying time in between coats.
Play the Love Lottery
Let the last coat set for about 15 minutes, then carefully remove the sticker paper. Set card aside to dry completely before putting in an envelope and delivering to your sweetie! Happy Valentine's Day!
