Tartans represent family clans from Scotland, with each tartan displaying a unique mix of colors and crossing stripes. While men often wear kilts for gatherings and celebrations, a classic tartan sash is an ideal way for women and children to include a family tartan in their wardrobe. Tartan sashes and kilts are often made from a high quality wool that will last through many wears. These sashes can be tied in a myriad of stylish and elegant designs. You can make your own homemade tartan sash with a few sewing supplies.
Step 1
Mark out a large rectangle measuring 60 inches by 12 inches using a fabric marker and a measuring tape on a wool tartan fabric. Cut out the rectangle using a pair of scissors.

Step 2
Fold over all four edges of the large rectangle twice onto the wrong side of the fabric. As you fold over the fabric around the perimeter of the sash, pin in place. Use only about 1/2 inch of fabric to create the small double fold. This step will hide the raw edges of the fabric from view.
Step 3
Sew along the pins you put in place in Step 2 using a small, tight stitch on your sewing machine. Use a matching thread to hide the stitching.
Step 4
Measure out two lengths of tassel fringe that are 12 inches long. Pin each of these tassel pieces to the wrong side of the fabric on each short end of the rectangle. Sew each tassel fringe piece into place to finish the ends of the tartan sash.
Tip
Practice making the tartan sash with some faux tartan material before sewing an expensive wool fabric.
