Curtain rods must be able to hold the weight of your curtains.

Hanging curtains over a window can provide privacy when you want it, while adding to the overall decor of the room. The curtains are hung on curtain rods, which are themselves placed on brackets that extend out from the wall. Ideally, you want to install the brackets into the wall studs if possible, as the studs provide extra support for the brackets as they hold up the weight of the curtain rod and curtains. If you need to install the brackets in drywall, use drywall anchors.

Step 1

Find the studs along the outer edge of window frame with a stud finder and mark their location. If possible, you want to attach the curtain rod brackets over the studs. In homes with standard construction, a king stud abuts the entire edge of the window frame at a width of 1 3/4 inches.

Step 2

Hold the curtain rod against the wall at the height you want to install it with the help of an assistant. Use a level to check the rod for level, then lightly trace the top edge of the curtain rod onto the wall with a pencil.

Step 3

Place and hold the brackets against the wall underneath the curtain rod to determine the proper spacing. After choosing bracket location, mark the screw holes in the brackets onto the wall. Lower the brackets and curtain rod.

Step 4

Drill pilot holes into the wall over the marks you made for the screw holes.

Step 5

Slide plastic wall anchors into the pilot holes of any bracket not being installed over a stud. If the bracket is being screwed into a stud, skip this step.

Step 6

Place the brackets into position on the wall, lining up the screw holes on the brackets with the pilot holes on the wall. Screw the brackets to the wall with the provided screws. Install the curtains onto the rod and attach the rod to the brackets. Adjust curtains as necessary.
