Things You'll Need
300-grit sandpaper
Rags
Water-based primer
Paint tray
Paintbrushes
Acrylic paint
Glossy finish
When repainting furniture it always helps to know what the piece was originally finished with. If it was finished with a Minwax Polycrylic, don't try to paint over it with anything oil based. Doing so will cause the paint to peel. Polycrylic is water based which means you need to repaint the piece with a water-based paint, such as acrylic paint.
Step 1
Sand the piece thoroughly with 300-grit sand paper to remove the Minwax Polycrylic finish. This can be very messy, so work outside.

Step 2
Wipe the piece down with a wet cloth to remove the dust and debris.
Step 3
Open up the primer and pour some into a paint tray.
Step 4
Paint the entire piece with a coat of primer.
Step 5
Allow the primer to dry overnight.
Step 6
Paint the first coat of acrylic paint and allow it to dry overnight; then apply a second coat.
Tip
You can add a glossy finish or leave it without one for a more rugged look.
