Step 1

Locate your Hertz confirmation that you received when you reserved the car. You may have printed the confirmation if you made an online reservation and you should have received an email confirmation. The confirmation number is required before you cancel or revise your itinerary.

Step 2

Call Hertz as one method of cancelling your reservation. You may dial (800) 654-3131 for a U.S. cancellation, or call (800) 654-3001 to make changes to an international reservation. Of course, you may call your local Hertz location.

Step 3

Use the Hertz website for the quickest cancellation option. From the menu on the left, choose "Rates and Reservations," followed by "Cancel a Reservation." Enter your confirmation number and last name. Click "Continue."

Step 4

Find your complete reservation on the next page. At the bottom, you will see three option buttons: Cancel, Modify and Make Another Reservation. Select "Cancel" and answer "yes" to the question, "Are you sure?" You have just cancelled your Hertz rental car reservation

Step 5

Modify or change your Hertz car rental reservation in the same way. Make sure that you get a new confirmation number and it's wise to call for verification that the changes are correct, so you don't have any surprises when you go to pick up your rental car.

Tip

If you booked your reservation through a third party, such as a tour operator, make sure you are allowed to make the cancellation and/or change. In some cases all changes must go through travel agents and/or customer service agents for that operator, especially if the rental is pre-paid.
