Installing an above-ground pool filter and pump correctly will ensure that the pool-cleaning functions will work properly given the right amount of water-treating chemicals. Above-ground pool filters are easy to install. They have no complicated parts like some in-ground pools. This is a project that takes only one person and about an hour to complete. However, for the safety of your family and friends, you should have an electrician hook up the electric connection for the pump.
Step 1
Measure the area needed for the pump and filter to sit on. Within a couple feet of the skimmer in the pool, measure out the area for the pump and filter. Dig down the depth of the patio block, and level the ground by digging out bumps or filling in low spots. Place the patio block in the hole. Place the pump and filter on the block.

Step 2
Connect the skimmer. Place hose clamps on both ends of the hoses and leave loose. Connect one end of the hose to the wall at the bottom of the skimmer basket. Screw the clamp on tight. Hook the other end of the hose to the front of the pump. Tighten the screw.
Step 3
Connect the return hose. Place hose clamps on both ends of another section of hose. Hook one end up to the return fitting on the pool wall, and tighten clamp. Attach the other end of the hose to the return on the filter (usually located on the top of the filter). Tighten the clamp.
Step 4
Connect the filter discharge. Some filters have a union between the filter and the pump that will need to be tightened with large water pump pliers. If your pump does not have a union, you will need another hose with hose clamps on each end. Hook one to the fitting on the top of the pump and the other end to filter fitting marked "pump in." Tighten both clamps.
Step 5
Fill your filter with sand or place the cartridge in it. Prime the pump to fill it with water. Plug the pump in, and it should start to filter your water right away. If you notice any leaks from your hoses, tighten them a little more.
