Cotton rugs are a nice addition to the décor of a home, and they can be much more comfortable than cold floors. Cotton rugs come in all shapes, sizes and colors, so it is easy to find one that will fit in your home. If maintained properly, cotton rugs can last for many years and continue to look nice. Cleaning a cotton rug is easy; it will leave your rug looking like new.
Step 1
Vacuum the rug. Catching loose dirt before it sets into the fibers is highly beneficial because it makes it much easier to clean later. An alternative is taking the rug outside and shaking it off.

Step 2
Wash the rug in the washing machine if it will fit. This should be done periodically to remove any dirt or dust that is trapped within the fibers. For a larger rug, a steam cleaner can clean the clean. Hang small rugs outside to dry. For larger rugs, place a fan nearby to help it dry.
Step 3
Spot-clean stains by dipping a toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide and scrubbing until the stain is gone.
Step 4
Hang the rug outside on a sunny day to kill germs and freshen the rug.
Tip
Blot up spills immediately to prevent damage to the rug.
Test an inconspicuous area of the rug with a chosen stain removal method such as hydrogen peroxide before using it to clean the rug.
After washing, fluff up the rug using your fingers to fix matted down areas.
