Styrofoam is a good base for a wreath at any time of the year. It works well for fresh, silk and dried flowers. Cloth wreaths can be made on a Styrofoam base. Styrofoam wreaths work best inside a home or between a set of exterior doors. The foam wreath ring or heart is the ideal piece to use to make a fresh floral spray for a funeral or grave site.
Step 1
Cut a 20-inch piece of wire or ribbon. Fold wire or ribbon in half and lay it down on the work surface.

Step 2
Place the foam ring top down onto the wire or ribbon. Insert the two ends of the wire or ribbon through the looped end and draw the ends through, tightening the loop against the foam.
Step 3
Cut the ribbon ends to no more than 6 inches long. Tie the two ends of the ribbon into a small bow with a doubled knot. This is your hanger for the wreath. If you have used wire, intertwine the two ends around one another to secure into a small loop hanger.
Step 4
Hold a piece of ribbon or cloth at an angle to the ring. Pin the end of the fabric in position. Wrap it at an angle around the foam ring until you have one full turn around the wreath.
Step 5
Continue to slowly wrap until the Styrofoam ring is covered with ribbon or cloth to add color and texture to the wreath. Secure the fabric ends with straight pins.
Step 6
Cut silk or wired dry flower stems with wire cutters to 2- to 3-inch lengths. Cut fresh flowers at lengths of 4 to 12 inches.
Step 7
Push wire stems through the ribbon covering and into the Styrofoam ring. Cover one-third to one-half or the entire ring with silk or dry flowers.
Step 8
Hold real flowers in your hand and floral tape them together. Lay the taped flowers against the ring and secure in place with greening pins. The elongated U-shaped pins will hold the stems firmly in place. Continue filling in with as many real flowers as you want to use.
Step 9
Insert the bow that is attached to a wired stick. Add any seasonal decorations, such as pumpkins, scarecrow, bat, Christmas decorations, U.S. flags or Easter items to the wreath by inserting sticks or wire supports into the Styrofoam.
Tip
Use thick Styrofoam wreath rings or heart shapes for heavy materials, such as evergreens. Real flowers will work well for temporary pieces for a party or a funeral arrangement.
