Making caramel apples can be messy, but it's a lot of fun. One of the easiest methods is dipping the apples in melted caramel. As the caramel cools, it forms a shell of deliciousness.
Things You'll Need
14-oz bag of caramel candies
Small saucepan
Wooden spoon
6 large apples
6 popsicle or craft sticks
Large cookie sheet
Wax paper
Chopped nuts (optional)
Coating chocolate (optional)
Step 1
Wash the apples thoroughly and dry. Insert one wooden craft stick into the top end of each apple right by the stem. Set aside.
Cover a large cookie sheet with wax paper. Lightly butter the wax paper.
Remove the plastic wrappers from the caramel candies. Combine the candies with 2 tbsp. water in a small sauce pan. Turn the heat to medium-low and place the pan on the stove.
Step 2
Stir the mixture constantly while warming until the caramel has completely melted and a smooth consistency is achieved. Remove the pan from the heat and set on a flat surface near the cookie sheet.
Step 3
Dip one apple at a time into the caramel, covering each apple about three-fourths of the way to the top. Spin the apple until the excess caramel drips off into the pan. Place the caramel apple on the cookie sheet to cool until caramel is set.
Continue until all apples have been coated. You can skip to decorating the apples now, or melt chocolate to add an additional coat to the apples before decorating.
Step 4
Continue until all apples have been coated. You can skip to decorating the apples now, or melt chocolate to add an additional coat to the apples before decorating.
To add a coat of chocolate, melt the chocolate in a double boiler. When melted, dip the caramel apples in chocolate about half way to the top. Allow the chocolate to drip. Set aside until the chocolate is slightly set.
To decorate the apples, roll apples in your favorite sprinkles, nuts or crushed candy.
Use your imagination and get creative with your decorating.
