When the apples are ripe and the air has a nip in it, a sweet and tasty caramel apple may seem like the ideal special dessert. Caramel apples are a popular autumn treat that are surprisingly easy to make. Whether you melt the caramel in a microwave oven or on the stove top, the process takes little time and effort.

Double Boiler

Stove Top
14 Oz. Caramels
Tablespoon Measuring Spoon
Wooden Spoon
Milk
Microwave-Safe 2-Qt. Bowl
6 To 8 Apples
Water
Melt Caramels in Microwave
Step 1
Unwrap each caramel and place all of the caramels in the microwave-safe bowl. Add 2 tbsp. water to the caramels and stir the ingredients with the spoon.

Place the bowl into the microwave and set the microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes on high.
Step 3
Stop the microwave after one minute and stir the caramels well. Repeat after each minute of cooking.
Step 4
Remove the bowl from the microwave when the caramels are melted and smooth. Allow the melted caramels to stand for one to two minutes if the caramel sauce is too thin.
Step 5
Dip the apples in the caramel sauce to coat them.
Melt Caramels on Stove Top
Step 1
Unwrap all of the caramels and place them into the top of the double boiler. Add 1 tbsp. of milk to the caramels and stir well.
Step 2
Add 1 inch of water to the bottom of the double boiler and place the bottom of the double boiler onto the stove top. Bring this water to a simmer (not a boil).
Step 3
Place the top of the double boiler with the caramels and milk over the hot water. Adjust the burner temperature to medium-high.
Step 4
Cook and stir the caramels over the double boiler until the caramels melt smoothly. Remove the melted caramels from the heat immediately when they are completely smooth.
Step 5
Dip the apples in the caramel sauce to coat them.
