Cheerleading mats are constantly subjected to dirt and oils from hands and feet and become stained and smelly over time. Dirt and oil can eventually cause damage to the mats if not removed. Cheerleading mats often represent a large cash investment, so it's important to clean the mats in a way that does not damage the fabric. Cleaning cheerleading mats involves sanitizing the mats and then refreshing the mats. The cleaning process for cheerleading mats is simple and can often be completed with items already found in your home.
Step 1
Pour one tbs. of color-safe bleach into a quart-size spray bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with cool water.

Step 3
Scrub stubborn dirt stains with a soft-bristled brush until they lift.
Step 4
Dry-vacuum the mats to remove the cleaner.
Step 5
Sprinkle the mats with powdered carpet cleaner. Allow the carpet cleaner to sit for 10 minutes.
Step 6
Vacuum the carpet cleaner from the mats.
Tip
Rent a commercial steam cleaner for a deeper clean. Do not use soap when steam cleaning the mats. If you do not own a dry vac or shop vac, allow the bleach solution to dry overnight, then vacuum with a regular household vacuum.
Warning
Always wear gloves when working with bleach.
