Mice cause fire hazards by gnawing electrical wires.

Mice can cause serious damage to your home by chewing through dangerous wires. They also affect your health by spreading a wide array of diseases. Mice thrive in dark, secure locations, such as under floorboards, but regularly crawl out in search of food and water. Learning how to get rid of mice under floorboards safely and effectively is a must if you want to keep your home and health in the best condition possible.

Step 1

Locate all mice entrance and exit holes. Mice can enter your house through openings as small as a dime, according to Michael T. Mengak, Wildlife Specialist at Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Step 2

Place snap traps near all entrance and exit holes and along all pathways. Mice travel along walls and baseboards. Position snap traps at right angles to the wall, with triggers nearest the wall. Put peanut butter on the snap traps as bait. You can purchase snap traps at hardware stores.

Step 3

Check traps daily and dispose of dead mice immediately. Put on a pair of disposable latex gloves and gently open the trap, letting the dead mouse slide into a secure garbage can. Disinfect the snap traps with bleach. Wildlife Specialist Mengak notes that you can dispose of the trap with the mouse still in it so you don't have to handle the rodent. Simply set a new trap.

Step 4

Seal all inside and outside openings with steel mesh wire or caulking to prevent reentry by mice. You can purchase these supplies at hardware stores.

Tip

Place your trash in a secure garbage can to keep your house unattractive to mice.

Mice are attracted to homes littered with debris, so remove all debris from your yard and keep your home clutter free.

Wildlife Specialist Mengak recommends saving unused traps in case you have a new infestation and have to restart the removal process.

Warning

Snap traps can be harmful to pets and children, so place them in secure, discreet locations.

Before sealing up all floorboard holes and openings, leave the snap traps out for a few days to ensure capturing all mice.
