How to Create Cake Shapes Out of Round Pans

Things You'll Need

  • Cake recipe

  • 9-inch cake pan

  • Icing in various colors including white, pink and blue

  • Colored piping gel

  • Colorful candy for decorating including licorice sticks, jelly beans and candy coated chocolate pieces or M&Ms

You can easily turn a round cake into a fun shaped cake.

You do not need special molds or cake pans to create fun-shaped cakes. Creating shaped cakes is possible using round cake pans and some creative decoration.

Purse Shape Cake

Step 1

Bake and cool two nine-inch round cakes according to recipe directions.

Cut the cakes in half so that you have two half-moon shaped cakes.

Apply icing to the bottom and to the flattest side of one of the cakes. Stand the cake up on a cake plate. Attach the second cake to the iced cake. The icing will act as a glue to keep the cakes together. Ice the cakes until covered.

Step 4

Using colorful candy and piping gel, decorate the iced cakes to look like a purse. Create flower shapes with jelly beans or create stitching along the edges of the purse cake using piping gel.

Mold a licorice stick into "U" shape to act as the handle.

Press the handle into the top of the cake and use icing to clean up the holes created.

Hat Shaped Cake

Step 1

Bake and cool two nine-inch round cakes according to recipe directions. Set one cake round on a cake plate to serve as the hat's brim.

Trace a four-inch diameter circle on wax paper and cut it out. Using the stencil as a guide, cut the second layer of cake into a four-inch circle. Discard excess cake.

Gently center and place the smaller cake on top of the larger cake.
