Miracle-Gro evergreen fertilizer spikes
Hammer
The eastern or American arborvitae is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to the United States. Arborvitae can handle compacted, wet soil, as well as highly alkaline conditions. You may still find it necessary to apply a fertilizer, such as Miracle-Gro, to help the tree reach its full potential, which can range from 10 to 30 feet tall, according to University of Illinois Extension. Apply this fertilizer once in the spring and again in the fall, if necessary.
Step 1
Remove the contents of the Miracle-Gro package. You should find several fertilizer spikes with one plastic cap. The cap protects each spike as you bury it in the ground.

Step 2
Put the cap on one of the fertilizer spikes.
Step 3
Position the end of the spike approximately 2 feet from the trunk of the tree.
Step 4
Tap the plastic cap with the hammer until the spike is at least two inches below the surface. When the cap becomes a hindrance, remove it and keep tapping the spike until you reach its intended depth. Save the cap.
Step 5
Follow label instructions regarding the number of spikes to place per tree. The number of spikes and distance between them will depend on your tree's specific size.
