Rust is the product of electrochemical process that occurs when a material, such a s metal, comes into frequent contact with water. The rust continues to spread, getting worse and causing serious damage if not removed. But there are few simple methods to prevent rust from getting worse.
Removing the Rust
Step 1
Remove the rust with a rust remover by pouring a small amount of the substance onto a paper towel. Apply the rust remover to all the rust on the object.

Wait for the rust remover to dissolve the rust. This usually takes 10 to 15 minutes, but be certain to follow the direction on the label.
Step 3
Wipe off the rust with paper towels.
Preventing Further Rust
Step 1
Dry the object after every use to keep it free of moisture and water. Keeping the object dry is the best way to prevent rust.
Step 2
Store the item, if possible, in a dark and cool place. Humidity and heat only encourages rust to spread.
Step 3
Apply a rust-proof primer with a paint brush. The primer provides a protective coating for the object.
Tip
Wear gloves when handling the rust remover. These products contain strong acids that dissolve rust.
