Glazing points are used for windows, framing and other applications around glass. They are small triangular pieces of metal that secure glass into a frame without damaging, scratching or piercing the delicate surface. Learning how to use glazing points can allow you to replace a window in an older home, use glass for artwork projects and do your own framing. Save time and money with this simple skill and make the most of this inexpensive, but practical piece of hardware.
How to Use Glazing Points
Step 1
Lay the window flat if you are able. Scrape away the old glazing compound using a gentle touch to avoid glass breakage. Reveal the original glazing points. Remove the glazing points from the frame with your putty knife.

Step 2
Use the putty knife to remove remaining glazing putty and lightly sand your window frame. Apply a single coat of primer or sealer to the clean, sanded frame. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Step 3
Run a thin line of glazing putty into the window channel. Set the glass in place.
Step 4
Press glazing points into position with a putty knife. Use two glazing points per side for small windows and position glazing points every 10 inches for a larger window.
Step 5
Apply a bead of glazing putty along each side and smooth. Allow to dry thoroughly, then paint as desired.
Tip
Use glazing points when framing artwork by pressing the points into the frame with a putty knife.
