Sealing stone is not a requirement but helps to limit the amount of staining that results from dirt and debris. A natural stone hearth uses a stone veneer applied to the wall. The soot and smoke from the fireplace will discolor the stone over a long period of time. Applying a topical sealant to the stone allows the natural beauty of the stone to shine through while making cleaning the area easier. The first step to applying a sealant is a thorough cleaning of the surface.
