Hot water bottle

Long clear drinking straw

If you are teaching young children about human anatomy, you can help the kids visualize the systems of the body more readily by making 3D models. For example, you can create your own functioning model of a heart using materials that can be found around a kitchen like a hot water bottle and a drinking straw. You can even clog the model artery to replicate what a blocked artery would look like in a real heart.
Instructions
Step 1
Fill a hot water bottle three-fourths full of water.

Step 2
Squeeze five to six drops of red food coloring into the bottle. Let the water sit in the bottle for a few minutes to allow the food coloring to be completely combined with the water.
Step 3
Insert a long, clear drinking straw into the opening of the water bottle.
Step 4
Tape the water bottle opening closed with duct tape to prevent any water from escaping. When you squeeze the water bottle, it will display what a normal heart looks like pumping blood from the heart.
Step 5
Insert small pieces of modeling clay inside the straw to block the flow of water. When you squeeze the water bottle, the water will flow out in a thinner stream representing what a blocked artery would look like inside a heart.
