440 stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains chromium and is typically used to make cutlery. 440 stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, inexpensive, and, when sharpened, can keep an edge longer than other types of steel. There are four types of 440 stainless steel: 440A, 440B, 440C, and 440F. 440A contains the least carbon of the groups, while 440C contains the most carbon and is used to make not only kitchen knives, but also replica swords and other decorative weaponry. 440 stainless steel can be polished with a specialized stainless steel polishing compound, which can be purchased at a hardware store.
