When you paint a silicone phone cover, you can spruce up an inexpensive, generic silicone phone cover or add new life to an old one. Painting silicone phone covers can be done with a minimum of effort and may be less costly than purchasing new phone covers.

Prepare and Paint a Silicone Phone Cover

Step 1

Prepare a well-ventilated place to work. Place newsprint on a flat surface to create a suitable workspace.

Step 2

Saturate a cotton ball with denatured alcohol. Rub the alcohol across the back and sides of the silicone phone cover. This will help break down the silicone so that it can be sanded. Allow the alcohol to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

Step 3

Rub the sides and back of the silicone phone cover with fine-grit sandpaper. Work in small sections until the entire outside surface area has been sanded. You do not need to sand the inside of the case.

Step 4

Wash the silicone phone cover with dish soap and warm water. Make sure to remove all of the loose silicone and sandpaper dust. Dry the case with a paper towel.

Step 5

Paint the back side of the silicone phone cover with an oil-based primer. Allow the paint to dry, and then paint the sides of the phone case. Let the primer dry completely.

Step 6

Paint the primed silicone phone cover with oil paint. Paint the back side and then the outside edges. Use at least two coats of paint.

Tip

Instead of using denatured alcohol and sandpaper, you can coat the silicone phone cover with paintable silicone caulk. This process is a little messier, but can be done in one step. Just paint a small layer of paintable silicone on all sides of the phone cover and then let it dry. You can then paint the cover any color you like.

Use stencils to create artistic designs on the back of the cellphone cover. Center a single pattern on the back of the phone cover or use a repetitive pattern.

Paint the phone cover and then use stickers to create one-of-a-kind designs on the silicone phone cover. Add the stickers, and then use a clear glitter glue to decoupage them in place.
