If you've ever been to a cocktail party or wine tasting, you know that one of the most frustrating feelings is trying to balance holding your wine, sampling hors d'oeuvres and meeting and greeting others at the event. Rather than put your wine glass down and risk losing it or having someone tamper with it, a wine glass rope holder that goes around your neck frees up both hands so you can enjoy the party, eat what you like and socialize without risking dropping your glass.
Step 1
Fold the square fabric on the diagonal, matching two corners together to create a triangle shape. Fold the fabric so the pattern is on the inside. Cut off 2 inches at the tip where the two ends of the fabric meet, and sew the fabric on the sides. Use your scissors to cut the material on the fold so that you have a piece of fabric shaped like a cone that is open at the top and bottom. To eliminate your cut lines, place the iron transfer hem on the inside of the fabric, and iron a 1/8-inch hem on the open top and bottom. Alternatively, you can sew the hem or leave it frayed depending on your material.

Step 2
Measure your rope piece to the length you want to create your wine glass holder. For instance, if you want your necklace to be 24 inches, mark the ends of the rope, leaving 3 inches on each side for knotting and finishing the necklace.
Step 3
Sew the rope to the fabric pieces at the marks you made in Step 2. Lay the rope against the fabric piece so that the rope sits against the side you sewed in Step 1. Use your needle and thread to sew the rope flat against the fabric. While you can cut the fabric and knot the rope, sewing it flat will give you better stability to ensure your wine glass doesn't tip. Do this on both ends of the fabric. You now should have a necklace with the fabric cone in the center. Trim the rope, or knot it decoratively at the ends that are hanging below where you sewed it. For a creative touch, you can string beads on the ends of the rope and knot off the tips.
Step 4
Test out your new rope wine by inserting a wine glass into the holder. You will want to insert the wine glass stem first, letting the stem go through the small opening so that the globe part of the glass sits in the cone. Fill with your favorite wine, and enjoy!
Tip
Use different theme fabrics to create wine holders for different occasions. Try different color ropes for an additional style element.
