Things You'll Need

  • Dishwasher

  • Sponge or scrub brush

  • Dish soap

Barbecue mops are often used to adorn spareribs with sauce.

One of the best aspects of eating barbeque is the tasty sauce; an effective way to lop on this rich liquid is with a barbecue mop. These handy little tools are made from a variety of different materials, and each is beneficial in its own way. The problem with barbeque mops is that they become extremely dirty, which makes cleaning them a necessity. The method to clean them depends on the material of which the mop is made.

Step 1

Rinse the mop under water to remove as much of the sauce as possible, and then throw the mop in the dishwasher on the regular cycle, if it is made of silicone. These types of mops are typically easy to clean; however, they don't hold as much sauce as mops made from absorbent material do. Wash the mop with a sponge or scrubbing brush and soap, if you don't have a dishwasher.

Step 2

Hold the mop head and run it under warm water, if it is made of a synthetic, ropelike material. Squirt about 1/2 tsp. of liquid dish soap on the mop and work it into the material with your hands. Rinse the soap out, and then soak the mop in boiling water for about 5 minutes to completely remove the soap and any bacteria or germs that are hiding in the material. Allow the mop to air dry.

Step 3

Soak your cotton mop in soapy water for about 5 minutes. Work the soap through the cotton with your hands to encourage the material to release the sauce particles. Toss the mop in the dishwasher on a regular wash cycle and it should come out free of germs, food and bacteria. Scrub the cotton with a brush and soap, if you don't have a dishwasher. Rinse all of the soap off the mop when the cycle is done, and allow the cotton to air dry.

Tip

Mops are advantageous over brushes to cover your food in sauce, as brushes typically scrub spices -- and ultimately flavor -- off the meat.

For easy cleanup, use disposable mop heads that you can simply toss in the trash when you're finished with them.
