Room dividers are useful tools that can hide unsightly objects from view or segment spaces into smaller ones, creating cozy nooks. Japanese shoji screens are an example of lightweight room dividers, where tall wood panels provide a sturdier option. Many room dividers are hinged panels, making them easy to stand and move if necessary. If you're installing a heavy room divider, ask for assistance to make the job easier.
Step 1
Plan the location in the room where you'll stand the room divider. Clear the area of any items that may get in the way of installation, taking special care to ensure the floor is free of clutter.

Step 2
Place the room divider in an upright position so the bottom is on the floor. Some room dividers have individual legs on the panels, where others lay flush with the floor.
Step 3
Adjust the left panel by bending it towards you along the hinges. Adjust the right panel by bending it away from you along the hinges. The center panel should stay at the same point as when you stood the room divider upright. Let go of the room divider and it should now stand on its own.
Step 4
Make any adjustments to the standing room divider based on your personal preferences. The room divider can resemble the shape of a "Z" a "C" or any other configuration in between, as long as balance is maintained.
Tip
Avoid the use of room dividers in a home with small children as they can topple over with rough play or handling from a curious young one.
