Overview
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, a customized set of cuff links can make the perfect gift for your guy. Cute sayings, Scrabble pieces and typewriter keys are just a few of the many possibilities for decorating. It's your chance to get creative and show him how much you care.
Supplies
To make this project, you will need: two blank cuff links with lip, two clear glass cabochon inserts, two images, strong industrial glue (such as E6000), adhesive remover (such as Goo Gone), a pencil, and scissors. Check out slide seven for additional decorating ideas and instructions to make cuff links with found objects.
Trace Circles Around Each Image
You can use a drawing, photograph, or text for your inserts. Place the clear glass cabochon inserts on top of each image and trace around with a pencil.
Place Image in Cuff Link
Cut each circle out and place inside the lip of the cuff links.
Apply Glue to Glass
A strong industrial glue like E6000 will secure the glass to the metal. With the flat side of the glass facing up, apply glue to the entire surface.
Push Glass into Metal Lip
Push the glass insert into the lip of the cuff link. As you push, the bubbles will squeeze out to the sides. Let it set for about five minutes and then clean the leftover glue with an adhesive remover such as Goo Gone.
Finished Glass Cuff Links
Now you have a customized pair of cuff links to give your special someone.
Alternative Supplies for Cuff Links
Get creative! You can use Scrabble pieces, typewriter keys, or any found object. For something like this, you'll want to use a blank cuff link that has a flat surface so it can be glued to the back of the object--no glass needed.
Glue Object to Cuff Link
Apply glue to the top round surface of the cuff link. With each object face down, attach the two pieces together and allow glue to set. These won't require cleaning up. Once the glue is dry, they're ready to use.
Typewriter Key Cuff Links
Typewriter keys are also a cute way to incorporate your initials.
