Canvas awnings can be a great way to contribute to your home's exterior design. Simultaneously, the awnings serve to keep out sun and provide extra protection from rain. Purchasing awnings can be expensive but simple to manufacture on your own. With a sewing machine and a visit to your local fabric store, you too can make your own canvas awning.
Step 1
The canvas awning will go around awning's diagonal metal frame. Use the measuring tape to find the dimensions of your canvas. Measure the height (the diagonal measurement from the upper to the lower portion of the metal awning) and the width (the horizontal length).

Step 2
Add about three inches to the width and about five inches to the height.
Step 3
Cut the fabric according the the calculated width and height.
Step 4
Hem the edges of canvas by folding over two inches from each edge and sewing them down. If you are using a sewing machine, read your machine's manual to select the specific needle model number for sewing thick fabric. Depending on your machine, you may also need to change the sewing machine's presser foot to suit the canvas fabric.
